Taking into account the rich biodiversity of the mountain, the Eastern Rhodopes are one of the most important regions for preservation of birds in Europe.

From the species enlisted in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria there nest the unique for Bulgaria and Europe Griffon vultures also called “kartals”. The spread of the wings of these magnificent birds is three meters. Soaring into the sky, high above the crater of the ancient volcano they represent an outstanding view - one of the main reasons for the rising tourist interest towards the region.

Besides the “kartals” there could be observed also the vultures Gyps fulvus, Neophron percnopterus as well as other threatened from extinction species like Black Stork, the long-legged Buzzard, the Blue rock Thrush and Rock Thrush, as well as many fascinating and rare species.
